There is a snapshot and a movie of this effect here http://s1028.photobucket.com/albums/y342/linuxfan_bucket/firefox%20things/?action=view¤t=firefox-hole-1.png
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. close firefox
2. start firefox
3.
Actual Results:
hole in upper left corner until home page loads
Expected Results:
blank/white background until home page loads

Trivial, but confirmed. It feels like this might be a duplicate, but I can't find anything at the moment. I've been seeing this for a while too, on Trunk as well as stable Firefox. Only a blip but shouldn't do it. Reproducible in a new profile.
I'm on Kubuntu 10.04 (KDE4.4). Your screenshot looks like XFCE. What distro?
Severity: normal → trivial
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: Hole in upper left corner while firefox is starting → Hole in upper left corner while Firefox is starting under Linux
Disagree trivial. A blip on the screen can make the user feel uneasy that something is wrong. Linux From Scratch 6.6.

Possibly true, though as defined for bug severity it's trivial because there it's purely cosmetic in nature, momentary at that, with no loss of function:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=fields.html#bug_severity
I've been seeing this since 3.0.1. Thanks for confirming.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b6pre) Gecko/20100904 Firefox/4.0b6pre
I'm not seeing this with latest 4.0b6pre. Please give it a try in a new Firefox profile and see if it's gone for you too. If so, we can close this bug report.

Great! Someone must've fixed this with all the work going on. I'll close this out as WORKSFORME then. It'd be FIXED (or a duplicate of a FIXED) if we could cite the exact bug or hg changeset that had the fix in it, but it's not worth hunting for that if it works now. Please re-open if this ever comes back.
Consider this fixed for Firefox 4.0 beta 6 then.

I think this was fixed by Bug 793501 in Firefox19

linuxfan, it looks like this was replicated earlier this year but then progress on investigating the bug stalled out. Are you still able to replicate it? If not, I'd like to close the bug for now. Thanks!

Hi,
wasn't able to reproduce it on latest Nightly (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:34.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/34.0 ID:20140807084340 CSet: 2f198e81ed98) on Debian Linux x86_64.
linuxfan and mfm773 can you still reproduce it with the current Firefox release (31)?
Thanks,
Francesca
